Promises, Promises

INT. BREAK ROOM — DAY. A coworker asks for a favor. Mary is on break. These two facts are in direct conflict.

INT. BREAK ROOM — DAY
MARY sits on a chair with her phone in hand and headphones in ear. She scrolls as LUCAS enters.
LUCAS
Hey, Mary. How's it going? Listen, I just wanted to apologize for not being able to cover for you last time.
MARY takes her headphones out.
MARY
You say something?
LUCAS
I said I wanted to apologize for not being able to cover for you last time.
MARY
Yeah. It's all good.
LUCAS
Good, good. Listen, I'm not feeling too good. Do you think you can take care of table 2 out there?
MARY
I'm on break.
LUCAS
Yeah, I know, but just this order so I can take some time to catch my breath.
MARY
So you want me to cut my break short to help you out?
LUCAS
Please, Mary. I wouldn't be asking if I didn't need it.
MARY
Who's on table 2?
MARY goes out to peek, then re-enters.
MARY
You don't look sick to me. What do they got on you? You owe them money?
LUCAS
No, no, I just don't feel so good.
MARY
Mm-hmm
LUCAS
I'll take two of your weekend shifts, please.
MARY
Like you promised to take this past weekend?
LUCAS
Fine. I'll pay you $30. Please just cover for me.
MARY contemplates his offer.
MARY
What's so bad about them anyways? They don't look threatening at all.
LUCAS
They're just people I used to know. I don't want them to see me here.
MARY
You're ashamed aren't you?
LUCAS
No. No, it's not that. It just didn't end well between us and . . . I'm very grateful for this job, Mary. It's not like that.
MARY
You'll take two of my weekends then? Plus, the $30.
LUCAS
Yes. Please, Mary. Help me out.
MARY
Okay.
LUCAS breathes a sigh of relief. MARY exits.
MARY (O.S.)
Hey guys, welcome. My name is Mary, I'm about to go on break but my friend Lucas will be out to take your order in just a minute, okay?
LUCAS
Aw, no, Mary. Jesus!
MARY re-enters the break room.
MARY
Now you know how it feels to not keep your promise. Good luck out there.
